Abstract

Tourism relies heavily mostly on transportation system. People travel for entertainment, site visits, and recreational activities as part of tourism. To go on vacation involves several different sub-choices that tourists need to consider one way or another. The objective of this study is to investigate the travel behavior and decision-making processes of individuals in Hyderabad city, India, about their choice of transportation mode. The aim is to identify the diverse factors influencing mode selection and to develop an optimal model for understanding and predicting such choices. Unlike visits for work or school, travel analysis in the domestic tourism context is difficult due to the wide range of visitor preferences, as well as the variability in mode of travel and destination value.

The construction and analysis of the models involved the utilization of data obtained through in-person interviews conducted in Hyderabad. Variables considered for model development encompassed household features such as income, ownership of vehicles, and the count of elderly individuals within the family. The collection of primary data involves the creation of a questionnaire that encompasses socio-economic characteristics and trip details within the study area. Various models have been devised, incorporating both the Nested Logit model and the Multinomial Logit model.

The outcomes derived from these models will be utilized for further analysis and insights to clarify and predict individual decisions in order to forecast tourist travel demand, as well as the relationship between variables and mode choice. Finally, based on Logsum parameter and Rho-Square values, the best fit model is developed from multiple trials. Understanding tourist behaviour and predicting their actions will help the tourism department improve existing mode choices and distribute resources more efficiently.
